Ultrasound device use is increasing fast, and the growth is visible in practices that never used this amazing technology before. It has also created a high demand for probe repair. The probe repair industry is roughly around 100 million per year, and this does not include the equipment services and maintenance markets. So what’s the deal?

In most cases, replacement of the ultrasound transducer is typically caused by the cleaners and consumables being used on them. The reaction between the plastics and chemicals found in most disinfecting wipes and gels can lead to hairline cracks around the probe head, cable damage, discoloration and cable stiffness; all of which can lead to exposed wires, poor image quality, and possible patient shock. “The disinfectant solution and cloth of the wipes that we provide are safe and gentle, not only on the equipment, but also for the technicians using them,” attests Arman Semerjian, CEO of SONO Ultrasound Wipes.

Semerjian explains that one of the major challenges faced by hospitals today is the increased service costs of ultrasound probe repair. “We are working closely with clinical engineering departments, asset management groups, and hospital CFOs to explain the negative impact of using such products on their medical devices,” says Semerjian.

According to Semerjian, the industry’s testing procedures are not working. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) have products listed on their compatibility lists that are causing damage to the medical devices they are used on.

The manufacturers of the disinfectants claim to be compatible, but there is still damage being done. “This led us to create a testing process first rather than a disinfecting solution. Once we perfected the testing process, we found a proprietary solution that we knew would not damage the equipment. Using SONO’s compatibility test, the effect of a given solution on a chosen probe or console can be tested in approximately 96 hours and represents one year of wiping a device five times a day,” says Semerjian.

Recognized by Medical Device Giants, SONO has created relationships with a number of high profile clients in the ultrasound industry. OEMs are reaching out to understand SONO’s proprietary testing method and how it can help them be less dependent on that part of their business.

With a keen eye on the future, SONO aims to collaborate with more ultrasound OEMs where the products can be tested to assure quality and compatibility in a timely manner. Semerjian is also developing a state-of-the-art compatibility testing center in 2019 to focus on strengthening the relationships with medical device manufacturers as well as adding testing for critical and semi-critical devices as well.
